Baby Grand Piano

One of the interesting hybrid creations from the variety of different pianos that has risen from Cristofoni’s original Italian creation is the baby grand piano. Most of the time this term refers to a grand shaped piano that is smaller than 1.7 meters. The classification is as follows: 2.2 meters and above means it is a concert piano, 1.7-2.2 meters is a parlor grand, and 1.7 meters and smaller is the baby grand.

The reason for the length discrepancy is dependant the harmonics and overtones of the strings. If the string is longer and truer to the average wavelength of the original frequency without tight tuning, in the case of the baby grand piano, the overtones will be truer to naturally playing the note creating a more desirable note. However, the note can still be replicated, although not with all the desired harmonics, by tightening the string to a specific taunt so that the correct frequency is emitted. This tightening deafens the piano from the ability to play the correct harmonics.

The advantage of the baby grand piano is that it retains all the elegance of the full concert piano, with some minor differences in sound, but only to the most discerning ear. It can fit in more rooms since it is generally less than 10 feet long. The style is still maintained and the beauty is there along with the accompanying beauty that people expect from a well played piano piece.
